At the age of 49, Powell became Ronald Reagan's National Security Advisor. Powell served as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (1989–1993) during the first Gulf War under George H. W. Bush and worked for George W. Bush as Secretary of State from 2001-2005.
